Kerttu - Music gig

Thursday 10th February 2022

Venue: Canvas & Cream

London based Finnish singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed 'island girl' Kerttu (Kerttu Sormunen) enchants audiences with her dynamic yet powerful voice and charming guitar accompaniments. Her voice effortlessly dances across octaves of pure melody like a stone skipping across water toward summer green pine forests, island beaches and the dream like archipelago's of her childhood.

There's a timeless and supernatural quality to her songs that seems to captivate audiences affected by the raw beauty, love and emotion that Kerttu brings to every performance. Be prepared to be treated to a combination of original songs, musical storytelling, traditional folk music and cover songs in her native evocative Finnish tongue, English and often also in other languages such as Swedish, French or even Icelandic.

Kerttu will be releasing her first EP in Autumn 2022.

Apart from her personal creative work, Kerttu also takes part in a multicultural musicians collective called Flotsam Sessions, with whom she performs and arranges open-to-all workshops and event built around shared love for music and creative community. More info to be found at flotsamsessios.co.uk, @flotsamsessions on Instagram and Flotsam Sessions on Facebook.

She'll be performed at Canvas & Cream in Forest Hill.

Carmina Masoliver is a poet from south London, and founder of She Grrrowls feminist arts nights. She has been sharing her poetry on both the page and the stage for over a decade, and her small chapbook was published by Nasty Little Press in 2014. Her latest book ‘Circles’ is published by Burning Eye Books (2019) and is an illustrated long-form poem, and she recently self-published ‘Selected Poems: 2007 – 2012’, a mixed media pamphlet of poems.

Her poetry has also been featured in publications such as Popshot Magazine, The Rialto and Brittle Star. Carmina was long-listed for the Young Poet Laureate for London award in 2013, the inaugural Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowships in 2017, the Out-Spoken Prize in Performance Poetry in 2018 and the Grindstone International Poetry Prize in 2020. Alumni of the Roundhouse Poetry Collective, she has featured at nights such as Bang Said the Gun, and festivals including Latitude, Bestival and Lovebox both as a collective and individually. She performed internationally whilst living abroad, in Singapore, and in Spain.

Carmina will be sharing a mixture of material from her publications, which will be available for sale on the night, and from new work. At the end, there will be a chance to take part in a Q&A and get books signed. Whether creating stories through characters, making the political personal, or asserting that confessional poetry is cool, Carmina's aim is to connect with audiences, bringing them into her world, where she hopes they will find a bit of themselves. Her poetry is said to be formed of delicate constructions, quirky sense of humour and startling honesty. Her performance style is often calm and understated, yet emotive and passionate, blending strength and vulnerability. Carmina grew up in both South East and South West London, and has been based in Forest Hill since 2020.
